Opposition Leader Mark Golding, who is already a billionaire, has promised to donate 80% of his salary increase to charity. However, there will be no way to audit this. Other members of the PNP are still deciding whether they will be taking the increase. This salary increase will be particularly beneficial to those households that have both husband and wife in power - the Holness family and the Vaz family - both families are already billionaires. There have been a few very small protests here and there on the island (see video above) but notice how silent those who really pull the strings - the Corporate Elite (PSOJ etal) have been on this issue? Even the fledgling third party (the UIC) while protesting online has not promised to roll back the increase. Most Jamaicans have just given up on the political process. The few poor people I am still in touch with on the island have told me that while they do not like it, they are resigned to their fate.....The feeling seems to be there is nothing that can be done. 😞

Bearing in mind the parliamentary dictatorship and bearing in mind the apathy of the Jamaican people, we are lucky that the parliamentarians did not increase their salaries by 500% or more. They certainly could have. The tepid reaction on the island shows that Jamaican politicians can do as they like.....
